It happens to me and it happens to my opponents. Just now I positioned someone for a backstab, the animation started, and just as I was about to stab, I was suddenly petrified, and my opponent did the backstab animation from in front of me and I fell to the ground but took no damage.

Boards. Dark Souls. So I've beaten Smough + Ernstein without knowing how to backstab Thekiller37 10 years ago #1. And I just finally learned how today >_>. I was always wondering how I couldn't ever get the animation to occur. Apparently you have to manually lower what's in the left hand before attacking. Don't block, and better yet don't hold any other buttons at the time you try to backstab. Also to riposte you have to parry first, this is done with the L2 button and a shield (you swing the shield a bit). If you do it at the right time (don't concentrate on their weapon, look at their hand position) you should see a parry animation and a sound For Dark Souls on the Xbox 360, a GameFAQs message board topic titled "Why can PvPers do 75% of your health with a single backstab?". Boards. Dark Souls. Is it worth it to fully upgrade the bandit knife for a backstab/reposte build? Darkastral 12 years ago #1. Combined with the hornet ring, I'm assuming it will do rather ridiculous amounts of damage. Backstabs with my thief while still in the asylum were dealing near 200 damage.
Players may perform a backstab if they position themselves behind a humanoid enemy and do a light attack with shield down. Enemies must be on roughly the same level surface as the player. Backstabs can be performed with nearly every type of weapon, although exceptions exist (see below ).
You mention it in your post, so I'm going to go ahead and say that it's probably the problem you're experiencing. My suggestion would be to either not bother with a backstab at all (silver knights are fairly easy to parry), or to just block until you stagger them and can get behind. Circle strafing the silver is more frustrating than helpful.

BS are BS. In DS whenever I get backstabed it is never a legit backstab. It always have to be a facestab, sidestab, or a rollstab. IMO backstabs should be removed in DkS or atleast tighten up the degree you backstab from so you need to be right behind the guy not to his side or face. uj2r4t.
